Enhancing active learning with generative AI driven tutoring

The YouTube AI Ask Button empowers premium users to engage deeper with video content by asking context-aware questions and receive contextual and personal AI-generated responses.

I was a core IC contributing to the project across its entire lifecycle, from conceptualization to implementation to deployment. I worked on Designs, implementing the web and mobile UI, implementing privacy-compliant logging, the serving infrastructure, and model quality.

While work is still ongoing, we were able to build a tool that:

• Improved user engagement and satisfcation by providing a deeper learning experience
• Enhanced the value proposition of YouTube Premium, driving growth
• Positioned Youtube & Google as an innovative leader in AI-powered education

Reliability & safety: feature-flagged rollout, shadow traffic, privacy-preserving event logs with PII redaction, rate limits and circuit breakers, dashboards/SLOs, and automated rollback on quality or latency regressions.

AI quality: prompt templates with versioning and traceability, offline/online evals for helpfulness/harmlessness, red‑team prompts, and user‑visible affordances that set scope and provide principled refusal modes.

YouTube Quiz posts

Empowering learning creators through quiz-driven video engagement

The YouTube Quiz Posts feature allows content creators to add interactive quizzes to their videos (like this one!), fostering audience engagement and participation.

I led a small team to deliver the complete creator and viewer experience across the creator studio and youtube apps, as well as the website. This included design reviews, android and web UI implementation, database design, reliability ops, and roadmap planning.

• Helped creators by giving them new tools to assess audience understanding and encourage active learning
• Increased viewer engagement with a more interactive learning experience
• Demonstrated YouTube's commitment to supporting educational content

Reliability & safety: progressive rollout with feature flags, access control, anti‑abuse inputs, privacy‑compliant logging, alerting with clear SLOs, and automated rollback playbooks.

GCP Logging UI

Simplifying enterprise-level troubleshooting with an intuitive logs viewer

The Google Cloud Platform Logging UI lets businesses monitor and analyze application logs within the Google Cloud ecosystem.

I worked on designing and implementing large parts of the UI to improve performance and build high priority customer-facing features. Namely:

• Logs histograms
• Tail -f style log streaming
• Time-based filtering
• AngularJS Angular 9 migration

This project demanded close attention to user needs, translating ambigious user asks into actionable insights a well-thought-out UI.

I also provided oncall support, ensuring reliability and performance for enterprise users.

Performance & reliability: virtualized lists, chunked fetching, and memoized selectors to stay under latency budgets; error budgets with alerting; oncall rotations and postmortems feeding a clear reliability roadmap.

Building the infrastructure for a transformative learning experience on YouTube

The YouTube Courses platform provides creators with the tools to deliver structured learning experiences. I developed core infrastructure components, including a robust data pipeline to manage course-related information, reliability frameworks for consistent uptime, and an engaging UI for course videos.

A significant aspect of this project was ensuring the scalability and reliability of the data pipeline, which handles a vast amount of information from numerous courses. By implementing rigorous testing and monitoring practices, I contributed to the platform's stability, meeting the high standards of YouTube's global user base. My work reflects a strong commitment to delivering infrastructure and UI solutions that support transformative educational content.

Data reliability: idempotent pipelines with backfills, replay-safe jobs, clear ownership and SLOs; canary releases and smoke tests before broad rollout.

An AI 20‑Questions game that guesses the video game you’re thinking of

Think of a game; the bot asks smart yes/no questions and tries to guess it. Built as a modern web arcade combining a React UI with an API that enforces game rules and tracks state.

• Tech: React + Vite frontend; Express API; Firestore persistence
• AI & data: Gemini (Genkit) guides question flow; RAWG supplies game metadata
• Infra: JWT‑scoped sessions; Firestore emulator support for local dev; cURL‑friendly endpoints

AI quality & safety: prompt templates with regression tests, content moderation checks before model calls, conservative fallbacks, and rate limiting to protect the experience under load.

Drop in a CSV (e.g., HowLongToBeat/PlayTracker exports) and get a personalized slideshow with your highlights, narrative, and stats.

• Tech: Next.js + Genkit (Gemini) server flows; React UI; Tailwind
• Data: CSV ingestion (PapaParse), derived metrics, and charts via Recharts
• Product: Shareable public link with social‑ready sections

Trust: client‑side parsing where possible, size/type checks, transient storage with explicit user consent, and AI outputs bounded by templates and disclaimers.

Timeline editing, Remotion‑powered rendering, and a smooth creator workflow

A web‑first video editor with desktop packaging that blends precise timeline interactions with programmatic rendering. Built for creators to stitch clips, integrate animated code snippets, and export polished videos.

• Editing: Frame‑accurate scrubbing, clip ops, and animation presets
• Render: Remotion render pipeline for previews/exports; React + Vite
• Desktop: Electron packaging with a minimal, secure preload bridge

Safety by design: sandboxed rendering, constrained IPC surface, and a permissioned file model to keep creator content safe.
